Updating Your Living Room: Furniture, Paint & Accesories by Dakota Bressler

Updating your living room is an easy way to change the entire look of your home because the living room is usually one of the rooms that's used most often. If you're designing your entire room, begin with the main pieces of furniture, such as couches, chairs, tables and television and media stands.

Once you've decided on what you'd like to have find a coordinating paint color for the walls and then look for accessories like lamps, artwork and other pieces to pull the entire room together. Great ideas can be found all over the country, from the Oregon coast to south Florida furniture stores.

Starting The Search In Furniture Stores

The most difficult part of redecorating any room is finding the main pieces that you love and want to live with for a few years. Furniture stores are great places to begin because they often have pieces already grouped together. Begin with your seating units and make sure to test them out to see if they're comfortable. If you're planning on putting a television in the room, choose an armoire or media stand to create an uncluttered look when the television's not in use.

If the room is large enough, consider buying a coffee table, end tables or other smaller pieces to pull the look of the room together. Don't be shy about asking the salespeople for help - oftentimes they'll have great ideas for pieces that work with your room and your budget.

Paint And Window Coverings

After choosing the main pieces, start the search for a wall color and window coverings. Paint comes in nearly any shade and some home improvement stores can even create a custom color if you can't find exactly what you're looking for. Before buying gallons of the same color, look for small, sample size containers so you can try out the color first. Nothing's worse than needing to repaint an entire room because it didn't turn out quite right.

When looking for window coverings, consider buying many different types so you can see what looks good in your room. As long as you save the receipt, you should be able to return whatever curtain panels you don't use, but it's a good idea to ask first. Remember to measure the windows to make sure you're buying the right size curtain panels and rods.

Finding Accessories In Furniture Stores

Accessories like table lamps, wall sconces, rugs and artwork will put the finishing touches on any living room and furniture stores are great places to find accessories that complete the look. If you can, take some digital photos of your room so you know where items like lamps and artwork will go. It's also a good idea to bring in a sample of your paint color to make sure the colors coordinate with any artwork or rugs.

With great salespeople, you'll be able to design a living room that looks like you hired a professional interior designer. You'll love coming home to your new, relaxing living room at the end of every day.
