  Gift Basket

Making Your Own Gift Baskets by Stephanie Foster

Sometimes it's hard to find just the right gift for someone. They may have everything you can think of in the price range you want to spend.

Perhaps it's time to think of a gift basket.

Gift baskets are incredibly flexible. You can do any theme you like with them. You can fill them up with all kinds of little things that can be used up or that will last for years.

And of course they don't have to be in a basket. You can use the gift basket idea but use something that goes with the theme of what is inside. A bucket with tools for the do it yourselfer, a craft box with supplies for the crafter you know. You can make the "basket" a genuine part of the gift this way.

The key to a good gift basket is to fill it with things the recipient wouldn't normally buy for themselves. It should be very much in line with their interests.

The classic gift basket is of course full of bath supplies. You can buy these easily off the shelf, but you can sometimes make them cheaper on your own. But as I've been saying, you can be much more creative than that.

Think about what kind of gift basket you want to give. There should be a definite theme.

While you will want to know about what size basket or other item you want to buy, I suggest buying the items that will go inside the basket first. This ensures that you know about how much space you will need. If your eye gets caught by something that wouldn't fit in the size you originally planned, you have more flexibility before you buy the basket than after.

Once you have everything, you can buy the basket. You will probably also need some filler material, unless you intend to have it entirely full. One of the usual things people do with gift baskets, however, is have the contents more or less on display, so the filler material is used to hold it up and in sight.

Before you start putting things into the basket, you will probably want to set the basket on a couple yards of cellophane or whatever you plan to wrap it in. This is much harder to do after the basket is full, but it won't interfere with packing the basket if you do it first.

You will want to take special care in positioning anything that might be breakable in the basket. Consider the positioning carefully or wrap them in fabric.

Arrange everything so that all items are clearly visible. Generally speaking, you don't hide items in a gift basket.

Bring up the cellophane and tie with a ribbon once everything is arranged to your satisfaction. Cellophane may not be necessary to all gift baskets, but for most it is a way that you can dress up the package a little and it also helps keep things in the basket while you transport the gift.

You may find that filling a gift basket is in many ways easier than other kinds of shopping. If you know the recipient well, you just have to think about things a bit nicer than you know they would generally buy. If you don't know them well, you can go with an easier theme and still make it feel very special.
