Tuxedo Guide: Things to Know Before Your Black Tie Event

by Hendrik Pohl

If you are to attend an event that calls for a tuxedo, do not be another penguin nor be afraid to rent one. Renting a tuxedo gives you the advantage of not spending a big deal of money for something that you will only wear for the occasion and you might even rent out one that is in the latest style. Renting out is really easy, but knowing how to carry a tuxedo will single you out as a man who knows how to dress up for the occasion.

Today men have been opting out the tuxedo. It may because they think it is unnecessary or that they do not want to put in any effort. I have been recently invited to the annual gala opening of the Indianapolis Symphony which is a formal, black tie affair having international guests including ambassadors and philanthropists. The night was enjoyed with the solo efforts of guest violinist Joshua Bell. Bell grew up in Bloomington, Indiana and he is now a professor of the Indiana University School of Music when he is not touring or scoring films. I thought the audience would specially turn up in tuxedos and evening gowns to honour a native son. But the scourge of fashion most people came in that casual Friday uniform of golf shirts and khakis.

Could it be that many were not able to find an affordable tuxedo the last minute? Though the invitation stated Black Tie Optional attire, you really must show up in a black tie. The word optional is only a polite reminder of what you should wear.

Noticeably, with todays more relaxed fashion, many men do not know how to wear a tuxedo anymore. So here are a couple of tips to help you learn how to wear a tuxedo.

When to wear a tuxedoIf your invitation states that it is optional then you really do not have any choice but to wear a tux. Then again, even if the invitation does not state the attire, you should still go the extra mile to show your date that you are a man of taste and wear a tux for that romantic evening at the theatre. You really do not need an invitation for an excuse or reason, her affection should be enough of a motivation it will surely be worth it.

Ways to wear a tuxedoTie options: The first thing that you will have to face when learning how to carry a tuxedo is that you have three choices that you can decide on. First, there is the pre-tied bow tie; second is the actual bow tie which requires a steady hand a bit of practice to wear. If you are in a hurry, never even consider wearing an actual bow tie. And last, a black tie provides a modern touch to any tuxedo, it is also best for an evening with a younger crowd.

Collar styles: Usually, you would get a band collar with two small points facing down when you search for a tuxedo shop. But if you own a pinpoint French-cuffed shirt of your own, wear it instead. It will be more comfortably bit and you will not have to pay for a lousy shirt rental. Shoes: Two words are enough for this: Black leather. Leave out the patent leather shoes that come with the rental tux and opt for your own black dress shoes instead. But be sure that they are simply capped toe and is polished to a high shine. You would be feeling better during the event and the next day as well. Cuff links and shirt studs: Just go with the set that comes with tux that you are renting. But if not, settle for cufflinks that are silver or stainless steel that do not attract much attention.

Tuxedo style that should you wearThe single-breasted jacket is the classic and all purpose style that fits any body type or size. The double-breasted jacket looks much better when worn by a taller man due to its boxy shape and cut. So if you fall below six feet, better stay with single breasted jacket. The shawl-collar jacket - Sean Connery made this style famous when he played Bond. If a salesman tries to talk you into this, just go somewhere else coz it is already out of style. The white dinner jacket is best for a black tie affair in a tropical climate. Otherwise you would only look foolish wearing it even in a summer as it would look out of place in a landlocked city.

Bending the rulesWearing only the jacket may be the best way to dress up a pair of jeans. Doing this is simply rebellious so if you are not that confident in yourself, go back in and try something else when the moment arrives for you to step outside.

Paring a black shirt with the trouser and jacket for a modern look is worth it if you are attending something else other than a wedding. However, the shirt should look exceptionally well made and looks as good even without the jacket.

The dos and donts of the tuxedoThe biggest mistake men do when wearing a tuxedo is by wearing the cummerbund around their waist with the pleats facing down. These pleats were designed to face up to hold the theatre tickets back when tuxedo jackets still did not have pockets and men carried their money in their jackets. So honour your ancestors and wear the pleats facing up
