Wireless Home Theater - Is It Up To Scratch? by Dean Caporella
The popularity of wireless home theater continues to grow and it may not be too long down the track when totally wire free systems will be the norm however, right now, home theater enthusiasts will still need to put up with some cable in their set up.
Let's face it, total wireless solutions still need some form of connecting power so the ideal set up with no cabling to worry about is still a little way off.
Why Wireless Home Theater?
Hands up if you have never tripped over a wiring cable of some sort in your home. If you haven't been completely upended by one then count yourself lucky. It's one of the downsides to setting up a home theater solution; organizing the mass of wires so they look neat and uniform enough to at least present a tidy looking set up.
Even for systems set up from the beginning where the wiring is built into the walls of the room can be a problem.
Why?
When malfunctions arise and you can bet they will, it means trying to locate the problem and in many instances it means having to open up a wall panel to find the problem. Unless you are well-versed in this area it means calling in a professional which most often times means an expensive repair bill.
Wireless Speaker Systems
These have come a long way in a short time and there are some excellent wireless speaker systems on the market. However, the technology is still at a stage where sound quality hasn't got quite to the stage where they run the rule over wired systems.
It's not to say that in time this will not improve but if you are considering going wireless then bear in mind this could be one of the drawbacks with these type of systems.
Going this route at this point in time has a lot to do with personal preferences. In many cases, some of the problems encountered apart from cost included irritating humming and hissing, lack of sound depth and dropouts caused by interference from other appliances.
The good news is, technology is improving quickly and like LCD tvs, the price of wireless speaker systems are becoming a lot more affordable.
Should you consider using wireless home theater? It's not in the scope of this article to sway you one way or the other but more to consider the advantages and disadvantages of both. The flexibility of having no wires but reduced sound quality or the mass of wiring and cabling but better sound quality.
