Green Living in the Home
by Alan Biron
Home decoration and home repair projects make for some of the biggest differences in green living today. Increased sensitivity to the environment has caused many green or eco-friendly companies to form around designing new furniture from old or reclaimed furniture or wood materials. Green kitchen stone, green friendly appliances, renewable hardwoods like bamboo, and low-energy lighting strategies like task lighting create attractive living spaces with green friendly construction rules. Special finishes that incorporate recycled glass have an attractive appearance yet are made from reclaimed materials.
Found stones or excess construction materials like rocks or boulders can form set-in grass or earth pathways around your home. Gravel can furnish low irrigation flowerbeds which guard against bugs and mulch penetration for vulnerable plants. Soil management for vegetable gardens and scatter gardens can be important when composting and catching rainwater in exterior tanks. The affordability factor of external landscaping becomes stringently practical. Cisterns and external water tanks can groom a home to exist "off the grid". Sustainable living goals are noted for their ideals of independent energy eco-systems.
Green living can happen from notifications in the press, and investigations into sickness and decay. A group of consumers get the update and wakes up to the evils of Tetrachloroethylene (Perc) in dry cleaning and start hand washing and doing spot cleaning laundry instead of mindless full loads. Secondhand clothing from recycling and re-use causes has a fresh new appeal. Walking to work or taking a bus or train versus powering an entire vehicle becomes an internal debate in green living participants' minds. Carpooling and hybrid car ownership becomes a possible option instead of a futuristic and impractical fantasy.
Green living happens when a home consumer starts rinsing clothes in rainwater with a bit of essential oil light detergent and drying clothes on a drying rack. Getting to a greener home can mean simply turning off the dryer for those last ten minutes and letting clothes air dry. Using a detergent without harmful phosphates, using a energy smart low energy washing machine, washing clothes in a cold cycle, and air drying or hang drying clothing can effect a smart drop in utility bills. Spot washing clothing is also preferable to the dreaded and decidedly ungreen chemical dry cleaning process.
Going green and exercising green living tenets means re-examining long held practices regarding household cleaners, dishwashing habits, and cooking practices. Sponges need to be washed instead of thrown away. Pouring chemicals like bleach or drain uncloggers is less green than a few more aggressive turns of the suction device. Harsh chemicals used in the bathroom for mold and mildew can be replaced by vinegar, borax, baking soda and other green friendly solutions.
Cut lemons alone can freshen brushed steel, freshen cutting boards, and loosen cookware stains. Using rinse pans with light detergent solutions instead of running water continuously can also cut down on unnecessary hot water usage. Loading the dishwasher need not be a daily task but an occasional use of resources. Pots and pans can drip dry or hang outside to air dry. Using lemon and vinegar, borax and baking soda instead of costly specialized cleaners can make all the difference. Green living strategically offers methods to reduce odors and freshen interior bathroom, kitchen, and household air.
Why haven't you put a water tank outside for water retention when it rains? Why haven't you tested your home for heat leaks between insulation packs and hardware crevices to outer walls? Why haven't you started a herb garden and/or vegetable garden? Strategic planting can prevent herbicidal and pesticide usage. Organic planting can reinforce the green living message overall. Layered planting of complimentary plants can assist soil health and rotating vegetable garden crops can yield healthy salad greens and produce.
But today the consumer footprint of every home owner, family member, business titan and factory manager contributes to the environmental product of all planetary uses. No longer can citizens of earth claim ignorance regarding consumer packaging, toxic chemicals, hard detergents, fossil fuel waste and products, landfill burdening, and the combine resources consumed to service the business of removing waste! Forward-looking companies and enlightened businesses today are cleverly combining sophisticated wind power and hydroelectric processes to supply greener manufacturing and production.
The concept of those who would embrace sustainable living is to reduce, re-use and recycle. With this mantra, every aspect of business, home, and spiritual life is enhanced. The building materials for a certain type of home might be reworked to include certified renewable green lumber sources. More aggressive heat envelope planning might heat better and significantly reduce utility costs. Home site placement and architectural designs that favor natural light and external rain catchment tanks can reclaim water at a rapid rate by the individual home or across communities.
