Retail Therapy Is Still Possible? by Shawn Wilson
If you are feeling the crunch of these hard economic times and you, like every other consumer, is cutting back on just about everything to help save a dollar or two, it seems that some things when it comes to shopping actually have increased sales during hard times.
Take for example lip-gloss. It seems that consumers being very careful about spending money elsewhere are still able to give themselves a little something to help them feel just a little bit better and brighter and opt for lip gloss as a solution. It's inexpensive, easy to find and makes you feel a whole lot better according to a make-up spokesperson.
Apparently, women love to shop and when they feel that they are limited and can no longer afford to buy larger items like clothing and shoes, they opt instead for something less expensive, but still makes them feel good about themselves.
True a little hit that doesn't last very long, but it works just the same and according to consumer reports, lip-gloss sales are up 40% these last two months alone!
Small items such as make-up and lip-gloss are a cheap and easy solution for retail therapy. Other items that have increased sales during these hard economic times are televisions, DVD rentals and movie theatre sales.
The purchase of a new television although might sound like a large investment to make at such a financially vulnerable time, however, it usually comes about after a family has decided to stay home in order to spend less and watch movies on DVD as opposed to spending money at movie theatres and restaurants.
Movie theatres are at an all time high as it is still a relatively cheap and inexpensive activity for people and families to enjoy. Many families are faced with having to cancel their vacation plans altogether and opt for more family nights at home and a movie theatre outing as a treat.
It seems that when people are down, they want something to uplift them and sometimes going to the movie to forget about life for a while is exactly what movies help people to do.
And don't be surprised if trying to find a good movie to rent at your local Blockbuster is difficult or near impossible to find as renting DVD's, staying home and making a home-cooked meal are at an all time high now and many suggest will remain that way for some time to come.
So remember that retail therapy is possible and consumers always shop, they just change the products they are shopping for.
