Is Online Shopping Safe? by Anthony Leavell
With Millions of people buying products online everyday and even more money transactions being processed via public websites, is your credit card or bank account information really that safe? The short answer to this question is both Yes and No. Just because it says it is safe does not necessarily make it safe. Credit card fraud is on the rise and this is partly due to the rise of internet shopping. So how can you be safe when you shop online?
The first thing you need to do is be sure that the company is reputable and be sure that the payment area is a secure site. One way to tell if an area is secure is by looking at the padlock on the bottom right of the screen. If it is locked then you are on a secure website, if not it is not secure.
Many companies especially smaller not so well known companies use services such as paypal. Paypal and companies similar to paypal are good because they do not allow even the person or company you are paying to see the credit card or bank account information, however I will caution you that it's not perfect. Even though the company or individual does not see your information you may find it difficult to cancel a subscription or service that you have signed up for and monthly withdrawals are taken from your account. If the payment method is set up to take money from your account on a monthly basis, I suggest that you contact the owner of the website and ask them to contact you or send you an e-mail when a payment is due instead of having them automatically take money from your account. This will save you the hassle of trying to cancel a service when they really don't want to lose your business or money.
Be sure your login information is secure and that no one can "guess" what it is. A lot of people like to use the same login information for several different sites online including payment sites because it is so easy for them to remember. This can be very dangerous do to the fact that now the owners of these websites have access to your login information and can access your accounts that have the same login. To keep this from happening use different login information for different sites especially payment websites. I suggest using random login passwords and righting them down on a note card or even finding a secure place on your computer to house all your login information to various websites.
The Bottom line is online shopping in many ways can be as safe if not in some ways safer than giving your information to a clerk in the mall who can just as easily steal the information on your credit card and/or checking account. But be careful whom you buy from. Be sure they are reputable.Never buy a product or service from a website that is not secure. If the company is a lesser known company be sure they use a service like paypal so they do not have access to your information. Lastly be sure your Login information is safe.
Online shopping is probably the most convenient way of shopping in this busy world we live in, but be safe and cautious when shopping online.
