Cellular Accessories: Incredibly Useful Devices
by William Gold
Cellular accessories run the gamut from carrying cases to belt clips, many in the Didn't Know You Needed It Department. But the most amazing thing in cellular accessories is that's been totally overlooked, straight from the Didn't Even Know It Was An Accessory Department! It's certainly not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of cellular accessories, but then the whole point of an article like this is to be informative. =)
In fact, it's not even a thing as such. Ask yourself what it means to accessorize your cell phone. It means to help you use your cell phone better somehow, and/or enhance your experience of the device, doesn't it? Well, "unlocking" your phone is a service that's performed on your phone, and while not an accessory per se it definitely enhances your overall experience! More than carrying cases or belt clips, unlocking your GSM cell phone is the ultimate in must-have cellular accessories, in this sense. Many carriers like to lock their GSM phones with programming so they won't work with SIM cards from another company. Unlocking your GSM phone means to reverse that programming so that it can work with a SIM card from another company.
But won't your carrier care? Probably not. Unless there is a stipulation in your service contract that specifically obliges you to not alter your phone, it's your phone, you own it. Even then, it's still possible to unlock your phone. Just be sure to keep the unlocking codes for future reference: there have been a few reports of some carriers re-locking phones even phones that were never issued by the carrier! You can tell whether your GSM phone is unlocked simply by trying to use another SIM card in it. (Note that all GSM phones are unlockable.)
But while entering secret codes yourself is the simplest way to unlock a phone, some require a reflash of their firmware. In such cases, your phone needs to be sent into a company that provides this service. Reflashing firmware involves a special programming unit, with connection via a special data cable. Not all companies have the capability to reflash all models of GSM cell phones, so check first to make sure your particular make and model can be serviced. Nokia phones are usually unlocked through codes which can be purchased very cheaply, while many Motorola, BenQ-Siemens, and Sony Ericsson models require a firmware rewrite (that is to say, "reflash").
